Allegra Nina Toran
b. 1997 New York, NY
Allegra Toran explores both the beauty and existential weight of Nature’s interaction with the human experience. She strives to confront humanity’s impact upon our planet by reconnecting with the natural world and inviting others to do the same through observation, exploration, and curiosity. In her “mindscapes,” she creates a meeting ground for the observed, invented, and remembered; layers of paint are scumbled, allowing the colors to optically interact. This “visual vibration” alludes to the interconnectedness, unrelenting motion, and visual noise found in the restless organism that is the natural world. Inspired by foreign and familiar places from her childhood, and more recently on her many cross-country roadtrips, Toran harnesses the unpredictable act of painting to reveal her landscapes through shape and color as she builds up the surface over time. Leaving the paintings open-ended, instead of telling the viewer where they are, she invites them to participate and discover the space for themselves.
